Retiree Chanh Kong Passes
away July 23, 2024

It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the
passing of Retiree Chan Kong on July 23, 2024.

Chan Retired from Ford Bramalea on September 2, 2020
with 26.2 years of service.

Our sincerest condolences go out to his wife, Samantha, and his two sons Jaron and Brandon and all his family and friends.
He will be sadly missed. His funeral was held July 28, 2024.

On a bright summer afternoon on July 23, 2024, Thong Chanh Kong passed away peacefully in Dorothy Ley Hospice in Etobicoke. His departure was a monument to a fulfilling life of adventure, love, and dignity. He moved through life cherishing and surrounding himself with loved ones, and just as he passed, that was what he was surrounded by: serenity and love.

Chanh was born in Vientiane, Laos on June 2, 1960, the youngest of seven siblings. He immigrated to Canada in the 80s with family, where he met and married his wife, Samantha, and had two beautiful boys, Jaron and Brandon.

Throughout his 64 years, Chanh had an unwavering devotion to his family. He worked hard to support them, and was always motivated in keeping his family secure and happy. He was immensely proud of his financial success, and wouldn’t hesitate to offer others tips on investments and stock trading. His eyes always lit up when he saw green arrows on BNN Bloomberg.

Chanh was an exceptional handyman. He spent a lot of time working on home improvement projects: painting, cleaning, keeping his home in shape. His handiwork extended into the yard as well: trimming the tree branches in the backyard, raking the waves of orange and red leaves in the fall, and picking wild mushrooms in the yard from where a tree used to stand.

With his free time, he enjoyed traveling. He explored places all over the world with family and loved ones, including frequent trips to beaches in the Caribbean, a month-long road trip across Canada, and multiple trips to Asia and Europe.

Chanh loved playing table tennis, priding himself as the champion of both his household and his workplace. He was also skilled in badminton, bowling, and tennis, and he could shoot a basketball with exceptional accuracy. He also loved jumping on his e-bike and exploring Mississauga alongside Samantha.

What Chanh enjoyed the most was spending time with loved ones, chatting, laughing together. He always talked about the importance of staying close to the people you love. He had an unending loyalty to loved ones, and was kind and caring to strangers.

Chanh wanted to recover well enough in his journey to be able to volunteer at Credit Valley Hospital to repay the healthcare community that worked hard to keep him as healthy as he could be. In his spirit, please know that we are happily donating all monetary gifts to Trillium Health Partners Foundation and Dorothy Ley Hospice.

It is with great sadness that
we inform you of the
passing of Retiree
Ernie Mackay on
March 25, 2024.

Ernie Mackay
December 6, 1939 - March 25, 2024
84 years of age

Ernie worked at Ford Bramalea for many years as a committeeman
and had transferred to the Ford Edmonton depot where
he retired and moved to the east coast.

Our deepest condolences go out to his wife Marina
and to his entire family. He will be sadly missed.

Obituary for Ernest Donald MacKay

We, the family of Ernie MacKay, are deeply saddened to announce his passing on March 25, 2024 surrounded by family. Ernest Donald MacKay was born on December 6, 1939, and was raised in New Waterford. He was a proud Cape Bretoner. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 16 years and served his country for many years.

Ernie was a devoted husband to his wife, Marina, for 31 years. He is survived and cherished by his daughter, Linda, and son, Steve. He was an extraordinary stepdad to Corry (John), Dione (Rob) and Jaime (Neil).

He was a kind and loving Grand-pa to Tara (Paul), Michael (Lena), Alexandra, Jared, Elle, Sam, Max, Nate, Mackenzie, and Baileigh and great-grandfather to sweet Oliver. He had many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins spanning from Nova Scotia to British Columbia.

He was predeceased by his father George MacKay and his mother Margaret (Burns); his sister, Peggy; his brother Dave, as well as his brother George “Red” MacKay and sister-in-law, Janet. As the baby of the family, he had so many good memories with his siblings including his last epic trip to visit his brother Red, in BC.

He lost a daughter, Margaret Ann, in infancy. His beloved son, Little Ernie “David” MacKay passed away on Aug 3, 1992. In that same year, “Tears in Heaven” was released and when he heard it, he would talk of reuniting with his son.

Ernie was predeceased by his brother-in-laws, Glenn Milley, and Joey Milley, who he could always depend on for a good catch of fish. His loving sister-in-law Joanne passed earlier this year. His mother-in-law, Mary Ellen Milley, adored him and would slip him some sweets when Marina wasn’t looking.

His sisters/brothers-in-law held him in high regard. He was fortunate to have Catherine MacKay, Ron Beaton, Linda & Ron McKinnon, Florence Milley & Isabelle MacDonald, Jeanette Milley, Laurie Milley & Dave Thomson, Freddie & Mary Milley, Steve & Tina Milley, Weldon & Bev Milley, and Darlene Milley, in his life.

He was with Ford Motor Company for over 30 years, working first in Bramalea, ON then Edmonton, AB, where he retired. Prior to working in the automotive industry, he worked in a variety of jobs, from coal-mining at #12 Colliery to driving a bread-truck. Ernie was a passionate Union supporter and served as a local CAW President for many years.

Through the years, he volunteered for many service organizations like the Lion’s Club and was an avid fundraiser for his son, Steve’s hockey team, the Bramalea Blues. After retirement, he volunteered for the NDP in Cape Breton and when he moved to Halifax he worked at the Dockyards for the Corps of Commissionaires and supported Veterans as a Service Officer at the Royal Canadian Legion.

He believed in Al-Anon and earned his substance and alcohol abuse counselling certification through the University of Alberta. He used his knowledge and life experience to help many colleagues and others through tough times.

He was a true gentleman, with a soft heart - he didn’t hesitate to share a laugh or a good cry with anyone. He will be most remembered for his quiet wisdom, and most of all his dedication to his wife, Marina, and his children. His biggest joy was to see his children, grandchildren and great-grandson happy. He took every chance he had to praise and give love, and left nothing unsaid.

We will be forever grateful for him even if we wanted him around for even longer. His spirit and love will always surround us.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Ernie at the Royal Canadian Legion, Vimy Branch 27 on Saturday, April 30, 5-7pm.

“Beyond the door
There's peace, I'm sure
And I know there'll be no more
Tears in heaven”

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Retiree Dennis Hodgson on February 24, 2024.

Our sincerest condolences go out to his wife Jacqueline and the entire Hodgson family.

Dennis Charles Hodgson (82), of Oakville, Ontario, passed away peacefully after a long battle with heart disease, on February 24, 2024.

Dennis, fondly known as Denny, was born to Herbert and Phyllis Hodgson, on February 11, 1942 in Toronto, Ontario. Dedicated husband of 62 years of Jacqueline Bonny. Loving father to his three children, Penny (Richard), Cheryl (Ron) and Michael (Colleen). Cherished Papa of Amber, Cody, Matthew, Ryan and Kiera. Proud Great-Papa of Reese and Cora. Predeceased by his brother William (Fiona), sister-in-law Marie (Peter), sister-in-law Gloria (Edward). Remembered by his sister Barb (Bob) and nieces and nephews.

Denny loved driving and going on long road-trips. He was always just a phone call away, ready to pick you up and making sure you got home safely. He had many funny stories to tell about his time boat racing, driving taxi and lift-truck at Ford Motor Co. His quirky sense of humour will be missed.

A celebration of life will be held in his hometown of Oakville on May 4, 2024. Details will follow.

We cannot thank the Nurses, PSW's and staff at Extendicare London enough for looking after Denny over the past 2.5 years, and to the Nurses at Parkwood Institute your care and compassion towards Dad in his final days were so appreciated. You are all amazing people.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dennis to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Diabetes Association or Salvation Army would be appreciated.

slowly going downhill but acknowledged our presence with a little smile.

Doug was a great friend and had a wonderful sense of humor.
He also was a proud Local 584 Union supporter.

Unifor, Detroit Three kick off
contract talks amid inflation, EV
transition pressures

TORONTO — Unifor national president Lana Payne emphasized that autoworkers expect to make significant wage and benefit gains as the union kicked off contract talks with the Detroit Three on Thursday.

“I made it very clear to the companies today that our members’ expectations are very high. Indeed, all workers’ expectations throughout Canada are very high,” she said at a news conference in Toronto.

“And for good reason. Profits are up and so is the cost of living.”

Unifor will likely focus on Ford Motor Co. over General Motors or Stellantis as the lead automaker during this round of three-year contract talks, said Payne, as the company is most advanced and forthcoming on its electric vehicle transition plans and other negotiations. No final decision has been made yet though, she said.

The union usually picks one automaker to concentrate bargaining on, with whatever terms agreed to generally carrying over to the other two.

The official handshakes Thursday that started negotiations between the union and the three automakers come as the rising cost of living and the transition to electric vehicles are top of mind. The twin pressures facing more than 18,000 autoworkers covered by the agreements make this round of bargaining especially important, said Payne.

She said the union made significant pension concessions, including a shift toward defined contributions, when the automakers were on the brink of bankruptcy after the global financial crisis and they’ll be fighting to restore some of what was lost.

Autoworkers are also still feeling the aftershocks of the pandemic with part shortages and supply bottlenecks leading to downtime and making life more precarious, said Payne.

“It’s happening against the backdrop of a stunning and staggering financial performance of the Detroit Three, with major profits reported in every quarter.”

Automakers emphasized the need to balance compensation expectations against the large-scale investments needed to transition the industry to an electric future.

Steven Majer, Ford Canada’s vice-president of human resources, said in a statement that the company and union will have to find the right balance between investing for the future and the sharing of profits.

“We value our partnership with Unifor and have important work to do together as we create a blueprint for the Canadian automotive industry.”

Stellantis said during negotiations it would focus on ensuring future competitiveness along with good benefits and wage increases. The company, which owns brands such as Jeep and Chrysler, said that both it and the union need to find creative solutions that meet worker needs while maintaining efficient and productive workplaces.

General Motors said it looks forward to working with Unifor to build a competitive future that also recognizes its employees’ contributions to shared success.

The last round of contract negotiations in 2020 led to billions of dollars of investment commitments from the three automakers, while Unifor says increased momentum on the transition to electric vehicles has brought total promised spending across all of Canada’s auto sector to around $25 billion in the past three years.

Talks are expected to stretch into September, with the existing contracts set to expire Sept. 18.

The negotiations are taking place at the same time as the United Auto Workers in the U.S. are also in contract negotiations with automakers. Payne said the two unions would keep an open dialogue but that Unifor would be charting its own course through bargaining.
